O’s may have outfielder on the way
There may be expanded rosters, but the Orioles have a dwindling supply of outfielders. Baltimore lost Adam Jones for the season due to an ankle sprain and lost Felix Pie to a temporary back injury on Friday night, giving the team three healthy outfielders.
Manager Dave Trembley said he has broached the topic with Andy MacPhail, the team’s president of baseball operations, and that help may be on the way. In that case, Lou Montanez, who’s missed most of the year with a thumb injury, would be the best option.
“I did talk to Andy about that. We probably will discuss that,” said Trembley of his roster’s weak spot. “The possibility does exist that we could add an outfielder.”

Jones leaves with ankle injury
Adam Jones was involved in a strange play at first base on Tuesday night that forced him to leave the game early. Baltimore’s center fielder hit a ground ball to third base, and the resulting throw got past first baseman Mark Teixeira. Jones appeared to make the turn toward second and hustled back to first, stepping wrong on the bag as Teixeira applied a tag.
Jones was called safe, but he immediately hit the ground and began pounding the turf. Jones sprained his left ankle, and though he stood up soon after a few moments and talked his way into temporarily staying in the game, he relented when the Yankees made a pitching change. Jeff Fiorentino ran for Jones and went out to left field, switching Felix Pie to center.

Jones inching way back
The Orioles still don’t know when they’ll get their center fielder back, but they have reason to believe he might be ready to play on Thursday. Baltimore manager Dave Trembley said he spoke to Adam Jones Wednesday and that the player’s back woes may be clearing up.
“I talked to him today and he says he feels much better,” said Trembley. ”He said he wants to go home and sleep in his own bed and he thinks that will help him. I asked him if he thought he’d be ready tomorrow and he said that was a possibility. We’re going to report to the park late tomorrow. …We’re not going to hit on the field. I’m not going to post the lineup at 3 o’clock. I’ll wait till he gets there. I’ll let him test it and see where we’re at.”

Jones out early with back injury
Adam Jones had an immediate impact on Sunday’s game but didn’t get to play much longer. Baltimore’s center fielder singled in a run in the first inning and was visibly uncomfortable once he made it to first base. The Orioles removed him in the bottom half of the inning and diagnosed his injury as a mild mid-back muscle spasm. Jones, who was selected as Baltimore’s representative to the All-Star Game, will be re-evaluated sometime next week.

Homer hat trick
Adam Jones homered in the first inning on
Wednesday, marking the third straight day that he’s launched
a round-tripper in his first at-bat. Baltimore’s center
fielder now has 17 home runs this season, which puts him
behind Luke Scott for second place on the
team.
All Star in the family
Adam Jones cited an unlikely hero Sunday, moments after learning he’d been named to the American League All-Star team. Jones didn’t reference a teammate immediately, although he would cite George Sherrill and Nick Markakis a little bit later. Instead, Jones paid tribute to his biggest fan, and someone who came by their allegiance honestly.
“It’s a cool honor to get to represent the Orioles and myself,” said the first-time All-Star. ”I’m pretty thrilled about it. I didn’t think I was going to go, but my Mom always said she was praying for me and kept voting for me. I guess all her hard work paid off.”
The defense rests
Manager Dave Trembley was asked for his opinion Friday of some of the advanced defensive metrics, which have consistently pegged some of his key stalwarts — specifically center fielder Adam Jones and right fielder Nick Markakis — as below average defensively.
Trembley, who’s more of a traditionalist, said he wasn’t aware of those numbers.
“I’d have to really take a look at what goes into the formula for determining that,” he said. ”I know Markakis leads the American League in assists right now, and Jones can run them down as good as anybody in center field. He possesses as good a throwing arm as anybody. I don’t know what qualifies them to rank where they do, so I couldn’t answer that other than what I see. What I see is two guys that I think are as good as anybody.”
Adam Jones giveth, taketh away
Adam Jones had a chance at a highlight reel catch for the second straight night on Tuesday, but instead he wound up losing his glove and his breath on a leap at the wall. Jones, who had robbed Kevin Youkilis of a home run Monday night, had a chance to reprise his feat Tuesday.
This time, though, Jones lost his glove over the wall and wound up in a heap on the warning track. Jones wound up playing another inning before the Orioles lifted him due to precautionary reasons. Manager Dave Trembley had compared Jones to Gold Glove outfielder Torii Hunter before the game in reference to his ability to make leaping plays at the wall.
Felix Pie replaced Jones, who is expected to return to the lineup Wednesday.
Up, up and over
Center fielder Adam Jones made a spectacular
catch Monday night in the fourth inning, when he leapt at the
wall to make a highlight reel play off a drive by Kevin
Youkilis. Baltimore had already given up a two-run home run
in that inning, and Jones went over the wall to save a solo
shot. That was all the excitement for the Orioles, who got
shut out by Boston.
One for the memories
The Orioles will get to face southpaw Erik Bedard on Tuesday, giving them a first-hand chance to appraise the trade that sent him to Seattle. Bedard, who was sent to the Mariners in exchange for a five-player haul that included Adam Jones and George Sherrill, has never faced Baltimore before and said Monday that it’s just another game for him.
“You have to or else I’d probably get shelled,” he said of his mindset. ”If I do, people would say that anyway. They’d say, ‘Oh, he was probably just nervous pitching against his former team.” You can’t win. You just go out there, do what you can and see what happens.”
